There's always a first time for everything, right?
Doing struts is not a bad job. I've done many of them before, on all different cars, but never on a 9000. Supposedly, like BrianZ stated, the bottom bolt is a bear to remove.
All you need to do is remove all of the components attached to the strut assembly to get it out of the car. You do need to compress the spring first before removing the top and/or bottom bolt. The spring compressor is easily had from any tool rental shop, as well as some auto parts stores such as AutoZone. You could also purchase a set (you need two) if you plan on making this a common practice.
Personally, I think your problem is that the front rubber suspension parts need a little greasing, or that they might just be worn out. Rubber turns brittle over time, as well as these pieces take a lot of abuse. They might also need to be replaced in that case. The shocks/struts on the 9000 tend to last a long, long time.
