This is all pretty interesting - I have a '92 9000, and the fuel filter is bolted to the side of the battery box, just like my '88.
To replace the fuel filter -
I find it is easier to remove the battery first. This is not for safety, although it is a good idea. It is just harder to get to the filter mounting bracket with the battery in place.
Remember, if you disconnect the battery, you will need to put in the Radio Code to get the radio working. Make sure you got the radio code from the previous owner.
To replace the fuel filter-
Start the car. Open the glove box, and remove the Fuel Pump fuse. The engine will die. Turn the car off. Remove the battery (not necessary, but it helps).
By running the car with the fuel pump fuse out, you drop the fuel pressure. There will still be some fuel in the lines, but it will not be under pressure.
The filter has a 'banjo' fitting on the top and bottom, and the filter is held to the battery box with a bracket. There are 'flats' on the fuel filter that allow you to stick a wrench on the filter, while you put another wrench on the bolts of the fitting.
How the manual reads - remove the bolt holding the bracket to the battery box. Put a wrench (spanner) on the flats of the filter, a socket wrench on the banjo fitting. Remove fitting. Do this to both sides. NOTE WHICH WAY THE ARROW ON THE FILTER POINTS. Keep a container under the filter - about 1/2 liter of fuel will drain out. Put in a new filter - NOTE THE ARROW FOR FUEL FLOW! Using New Copper Washers. Don't use the old ones. Put everything back together, put the fuel pump fuse back in, and you're fine. It will take a few extra seconds for the car to start the first time.
What will usually happen is that you won't be able to keep the filter body from turning. What I do: Leave the filter bolted to the battery box. This helps keep it from turning. Put a wrench on the filter flats, and with another wrench, reach UNDER the filter and loosen the bottom banjo bolt. Remember it is upside down, so turn the other way. Don't remove it - just loosen it a little. Stick a cup under the filter to catch the fuel. Not much will come out.
Now, loosen and remove the top bolt. When the top bolt is removed, the fuel will run out of the filter into the cup. When it's done, remove the filter from the bracket, and remove the lower bolt.
I always keep a fire extinguisher handy any time I open up the fuel system. I've never needed it, but that's probably because I have it.
Good luck!
