You don't need a hoist if you are handy at fabrication. Quasi's site details his approach, but you can make a hanger out of wood or steel to support the engine while the transmission is removed/installed. Basically you want to spread the load along the channels at the edges of the fenders by the hood. A good 2x4 on edge is strong enough for a cross piece. Position and drill it to take a 1/2" eyebolt attached to the the lifting eye of the engine. Lots of variations to this approach, but safety and common sense should prevail.
