As the others have noted, a typical drain takes out much less than the 9 or so quarts specified - that's the amount for a dry tranny. I usually expect to drain out about 4 quarts - I use a calibrated bucket to get an idea how much to put back in.
Yes, replace the filter, especially if the fluid hasn't been changed in a long while. If you're doing the repeated drain/fills, you need only change the filter once. Removing the filter usually requires grabbing it with a needle nose pliers and pulling it down.
Synthetic fluid is very nice, but last time I checked, Saab did not recommend synthetic fluid in the transmission. This doesn't mean synthetic won't work, or won't work well. It's just that Saab hadn't tested the transmission with synthetic, so it couldn't stand by using a non-tested fluid. Testing takes a lot of time and money, so it makes sense that they wouldn't doit for an older design.
That said, synthetic is probably fine. Personally, I go with good quality 'conventional' fluid and replace it often.
