I've run into a few different problems-
Make sure the door latch is tight, and the pin adjusted properly. Open the door, and look at the latch on the door. Make sure the screws are tight. If the door has sagged any (as we all do, with time), the latch pin may be out of alignment. Close the door slowly, and sight to see if the pin is going into the center of the latch opening. You can adjust the latch pin by loosening it (Don't remove), with a good 6 point socket or wrench. Be careful, because usually this pin is very tight, and the flats are very thin -very easy to round.
OK, what I think the real problem - when you pull on the door handle, it moves some levers that eventually release the latch. Over time and use, this lever system develops slop. You pull on the outside door handle, but motion is lost on the way to the latch release mechanism.
This is made worse by the way the door handle works. If you just pull the door handle out, you actually pull the door out a little. This loads the lock mechanism, requiring more ooomph on the latch release. As a short term solution, try this-
When you open the driver's door, press on the stationary portion of the door handle with your thumb when pulling the latch. Think more of the motion of moving the handle, and less on pulling the door. Even try this - use your free hand to press on the top of the door when pulling the latch. Quite often that unloads the door latch enough to make the door open easily.
The 'ultimate' solution is to bend the door latch lever a little bit to take out the slop that builds up over time. This requires removing the door inner panel. Search back through the archives - I did a post on door latch rejuvination a while back.
