First, I'm assuming this is an automatic transmission.
I have suffered the exact same failure (or at least the car did). In my case, it was while stopped at a red light at a very busy intersection. Driving backwards to get out of traffic was a very exciting experience. Moments before, the tranny was shifting poorly and hesistating in shifts.
The bad news - your transmission is probably toast. When I had my tranny pulled apart, the clutch packs were burned up, and the inner splines on some drive gears were shredded.
There is a remote chance something went wrong in the valve body, but if I were you, I would be assuming it's rebuilt tranny time. I suggest you contact Eriksson Transmissions.
