The pre-'94 trannies have a history of being temperamental about the fluid used. Some, including me ('91 9KT), elected to try a heavily advertised hypoid gear oil and lived to witness total destruction of the transaxle, and the incidence is more frequent than can be called anecdotal.
Frankly, I'd use only 10w30 or 10w40 fossil engine oil in pre-'94 trannies, and there may be wisdom in not changing the fluid at all. After all, Saab didn't include drain plugs on those units and have no maintenance recommendations.
The '94 and later trannies are re-engineered and have drain plugs, and those seem to work fine with Saab's new-generation synthetic transaxle fluid. My '95 Aero has had it installed for over three years and I've had no problems. Some here have said that Erikson, the well-known rebuilder, doesn't recommend the new fluid in pre-'94 trannies. Indeed, Saab does okay retrofitting this fluid, but make sure you purge the unit of all old fluid first according to the TSB. If you need a copy of it I have a scan I could send you.
