1. Go to http://www.quasimotors.com and check out his advice re buying a 9000.

2. HP on auto trans equipped 9000 Aeros were 200 hp (vs 225 hp for the manual trans cars). Is the auto on this car original? When was the last time that the ATF was changed?

3. Have the serpentine belt and the related pulley's been changed? What about the belt tensioner assembly? At this mileage it would be due to be changed.

4. When you turn the windshield defroster on does the windshield fog up, or do you smell any engine coolant? Heater cores on these cars are a problem area and the aforementioned items are symptoms of a leaking heater core.

5. Has the direct ignition cassette ever been changed? About a $300 item when it goes, and anytime after 100,000 is when it would be appropriate to carry a spare di cassette in the car (installation is an easy 5 minute job).

6. Open the hood, start the engine and rev the engine. Do you see more than 3 inches or so of engine movement? If so, the engine mounts may be due to be changed.

7. What service records are available on the car?

8. Is the owner willing to let you take the car to a mechanic. Best to get a mechanic who is familiar with Saabs review the car for any problems.

Don't let any of the above discourage you from the car, but this will help you go into this thing with eyes wide open. I bought a 1994 Aero five years ago (now at 76,000 miles) and these cars are flat out teriffic in just about every aspect. The 9000 Aero is by far the absolute best car that I have ever owned, bar none.

Good luck.
