I replaced mine (blower fan too) in January. I haven't had any leaking but I am sure the plastic end tanks are the weak link in the system. The steel core eliminates that. I also replaced the two short hoses, that way if a hose went bad on me I knew it wouldn't be under the aquarium cover. Quasi's writeup is Perfect for this job. Only a few minor variations between his pictures and my views (in a 94).
It would be a good idea to change the coolant, but I only lost the amount of coolant in the core when I changed it out. (make sure you have a drain pan under the car it'll run outta the drain hose in the bottom of the aquarium).
The blower motor took maybe 10 minutes more than just the heater core job since you have remove the fan housing to replace the core.
Good luck
Matt
