Which synth-oil to use???

The PO of my "new" '96 9000 CSET used dino oil every 3K. It's due for a change in 2 weeks. I'm thinking going to synthetic (Mobil 1) and changing every 5K would be a good idea.
I've seen posts here recommending 15-50 oil, but I want to see what others are doing. I live in NH, so some cold mornings aren't far off. MY old C900 NA was happy with 10-40, but anything heavier made the lifters knock on cold days until it was warmed up.
And for a filter, is there a big difference between Mann, Saab and the top line Purolator (Pure 1 or something?). Recommendations?
TIA
Noel
