I got teardrop alloys for my '84 C900 and run them year round (presently with Nokian WRs). The wheels were $50 each, look fine and do the job. They could use repainting but then so could the whole car.
My 96 9000CSET (got it last month) came with a set of used Saab alloys and new snows. They go on next weekend when the Aero wheels come off.
I like the better looks and strength of the alloys, not having them rust, and not having to use wheel covers (to hide the rust). When I ran steels I would lose a cover every year or so.
IMHO, if you can get alloys cheap, use 'em. I think of winter wheels as consumables, like tires, so if one gets damaged you get another.
