I use the 12V, 60 ma, wire lead bulbs, that come two to a pack for about $1.80 from Radio Shack.
Remove the switch from the dash - I use two flat blade screwdrivers to slowly work it out. With one out, you can get your finger around behind the other one.
If you decide to unplug the switch from the cable, tie some string to the cable first. So when the cable disappears back into the dashboard, you can pull it back out.
Carefully bend the tabs out, and remove the cap and thumbwheel.
Unsolder the old bulb, solder in the new. When you stick the cap back on, make sure the thumbwheel engages the lever arm.
That should do it.
