Warning about "dirty" ATF, sad tale of zf death

Carefully going through Service records on my recently purchased 9kt, I noticed an Auto Tranny and radiator change at 100k, which seems to support the notion that the ZF auto has a 100k service life. What I found in the earlier records at 98k is illuminating, as the ATF was changed due to hard shifting. The Technician notes state "ATF very dirty/contaminated". The subsequent failure at 100k tells me the "dirty ATF" was most likely showing engine coolant leaking into trans fluid due to radiator failure as a early warning of Transmission destruction. I think this particular story strengthens the case for regular ATF partial changes during engine oil changes and to vigorously determine the cause of "dirty" or discolored ATF. I think it also is a sad note that the "Saab dealer service" was not a quarantee of quality service, as the radiator was obviously the root of the problems. As for myself, I am a happy man because I know I've got only 37k on these major components and intend to keep the car for a long time, indeed.
