The ABS system does a few self-tests. One tests the impedance (resistance) of each of the sensors. If the sensor wire is damaged, or there is a poor connection at the connector, it can trip the ABS self-test.
The brakes work just fine without ABS - you just don't have ABS.
Brady is right on - check the ABS sensor connectors. The wire comes straight out of the sensor at the wheel (you don't want to have a connector in the harsh wheel environment) and ties up into the wiring harness to the ABS box up in the aquarium. The RF connector is pretty much behind the evaporator. The others are on the left side (looking forward), under the plastic cover. The connectors are cylindrical, and kind of look like the cap of a pen, just a little longer and thicker. Unplug and re-plug them a few times - it cleans the contacts. Make sure the wires aren't pinched under anything. Lastly, remove and reseat the big 'harmonica' connector on the ABS box (left side, in aquarium).
