The timing chain on my recently purchased 91 9K (with 140K) got quite noisy after switching to Saab Syn Turbo oil. I decided to check rubber the guide in the valve cover. It was pretty stiff compared to the new one and had two small grooves worn in it. The chain and sprockets don't really look too worn to me, but I'm not 100% sure what to look for. I've had bikes and motorcycles and have a fair idea where chains and sprockets wear. These look pretty good--in fact they look so good you'd think they were new. Which is why I wondering if I'm missing something. The valve gasket appears to have been on there for some time--the gasket stuff is very brittle, but it looks too imperfect to be a factory job. I didn't get a chance to pull the plugs and turn the engine before I left for the day. But I could just see a link that is a different color, could it be a master link? Would that mean it had been changed since it's my understanding there are no master links in factory chains? The chain seems tight. Anything else I should check?
