It's a combination of care and fix.

I'm pretty sure most DI "die" becuse oil leaks out from ignition coil. Low oil level overheats them. It eventualy causes coil turns to die (short circuit), overloading the switching transistor which then burns out. Old type DI has removable ignition coils, which can be replaced.

Now, problem is getting a new coil, and they used to be quite expensive ($67 I believe) so it woulden't make much difference getting a new DI cassete ($67 x 4 = $268).

If one can get transformer oil (like myself) one can refill them. Drilling a hole at the top of coil, just enough to fit a syringe needle in it, will be quite enough. Hole can be sealed with a drop of superglue. Leak at the bottom of the coil can be also stopped with superglue. Gassoline or acetone will degrease areas that have to be glued.

Oil level can be seen through the coil body.

I suppose new type DI can be fixed this way, wthout removing ignition coils.

I bougt 4 used coils for $10, so now I have spare. Checking coils periodicaly is care. Replacing (refilling) them is a fix.

I can't help you much about transformer oil, but it can be found in most of high voltage transformers.
In my county (Serbia and Montenegro) transformer oil can be found in 110 kV to 220 V transformer station. This oil is toxic when burns.
