HELP! Stuck in middle of brake job!!!

Things are not going smoothly in my first attempt at a front brake job.
I got everything removed, the now rotor put in, and the caliper and carrier re-mounted, but I can't get the new pads to fit! It just seems like they are too thick (though they physically fit otherwise) to let the caliper body swing down into place over the rotor.
I can just barely get the old pads on (which are obviously worn) so I think I am missing something. Someone mentioned compressing the piston. How do I go about doing this?
For the record, the parts are new Brembo rotors and PBR deluxe pads, all from eEuroparts.com. The calipers are Girling.
Any help is massively appreciated!
Craig
