Posted earlier about my no start Aero. I had swapped DI, fuel pump relay, and checked all fuses. Hot wired the pump from fuse#14 to #22 to force the pump to run, but could not hear anything. I now doubt that I would have heard it from the front seat, even with the pump cover off.
My big concern was that people reported that if you don't get a bounce in RPM on the tach to suspect the Crank Position Senosr. I had no bounce. But everything else seemed to point to the fuel pump.
Todd at eEuroparts talked me into the whole unit for $380 instead of trying to rebuild with the pump only for some $300 less. I needed to get the wife rolling again, so went for it. Also, I've got a '95CSE with more miles that will likely need a fuel pump sooner or later, so will save the part to rebuilt that pump at my leisure.
Todd is working on getting a new hose to make the rebuild easier. When he gets it, I'll do my rebuild. I've heard it is tricky to try to get the new pump into the old hose as it hardens with age.
Posts on this board suggest cutting off the old nipple inside the hose and using a section of standard gas hose and two clamps to make the new connection. Todd and two independant mechanics I spoke with think this is a bad idea, and only a short term solution. Apparently this hose is not made for imersing in gas and will disolve in a year or so. I was afraid of the mess that would make for the pump, filter, and downstream.
Keep an eye out for Todd's new hose. It may save a big chunck of change!
The pump did the trick for me. Though after about 10 seconds of cranking the engine I was convinced that I had just wasted $380 and a morning. At 15 seconds it began chugging and started. Whew!
Hardest part was getting the old ring off. Finally began pounding away with a cold chisel in the direction I wanted it to go. Was then able to use my home built "Saab Tool" to turn the retainer ring. The real tool may be worth the $50 or $80 Saab is asking for it! I'd be interested in hearing other's solutions to this problem! Haynes suggests a 'water pump wrench' which looked like big Channel Locks. The big 'channel locks' I tried would not fit the segments on the ring, or fit into the hole in the trunk.
Hope my bumbling will help someone else along the way.
