Brake light switch repair Posted by dan [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Was just reminded again about a surprisingly easy fix to a common 9000 problem. Brake lights staying on even after releasing the pedal.
If you simply replace the brake light switch (often with some aggravation) you may find this will NOT cure the problem. More likely it is not the switch that is the culprit, but the metal bracket that the switch is held in. That bracket will bow out away from the pedal side after years of use just enough to not allow the switch to be pressed in enough to turn off the circuit. Since there is no adjustment, replacing the switch with a new one often means finding you've wasted one switch and bought a new one for no reason!
Instead, first try using a long drift (like an old 1/2" extension bar) and gently whacking the square holed mounting bracket holding the switch with a hammer. I'm not talking about CRUSHING the bracket inwards! It should require surprisingly little "adjustment" to make the brake lights finally go off in the "pedal released" position. You simply have to push the metal bracket back in enough to activate the switch and turn off the brake lights once again. (If this works, you will be able to solve this problem with the only new parts being a couple plastic pins/expansion "buttons" that go through the carboard covering under the dash. (Available only from the dealer of course.) Good luck!
