Wondering if anyone can help me diagnose the following in my 1992 9000
On a long trip in September I began to notice a vibration from the front end at about 45mph. In between 45 and 55mph the noise faded but came back at 55mph at a higher pitch. The noise was completely speed-dependent, made no difference what gear I was in or whether I was in neutral. At this point, I suspected a wheel bearing and took the car to a shop to try to determine what was causing the noise.
The shop told me that it was being caused by an internal transmission bearing going bad and they would need to replace/rebuild the transmission.
At this point I took the car to my more trusted and ingenious indy Saab mechanic who confirmed the transmission bearing diagnosis and I had the following work done:
Transmission:
rebuilt, new pinion bearing, roller bearing, pinion shaft, 5th gear, clutch/slave
Suspension:
replace l&r lower ball joints, l&r control arm bushings, upper motor mount bushings, cv boots
Timing:
replace timing chain, timing chain tensioner, balance shaft chain, balance shaft chain sprocket (this was the ORIGINAL sprocket at 210,000miles -- and boy was it in bad shape)
The thrust of this post is that the original noise that brought me into the shop hasn't gone away. While I caught a lot of things that had the potential to destroy my car, the noise hasn't been solved. It seems to have gotten a little worse, now appearing (quietly) at about 35mph and behaving similarly at 45 and 55mph.
I'll entertain any ideas as to what could be causing this...
Thanks in advance!
