I'm still having intermittent gremlins in my electrical system on my '91 9000 CD:

When turning the key to start, more or less the entire power grid sometimes goes black. To be specific, the +54 grid goes out, i.e. fuses 1-12 and 25-26, but also a number of things on the +30 grid fail as well; fuses 16-24 are gone, whereas 13, 29, 30 and 31 on the +X grid remain hot, and the instruments and lights on grid +15 are ok as well. The pictogram falsely indicates trunk open, and the tank gauge reading is also off, but the rest of the readings seem ok.

On one of the occasions where it was black, I figured I should check the ignition relay, and started disassembling the dash. When wriggling about the glove box to get it out, the grids flickered and came back on, and after that all was normal. I am now unable to reproduce the fault. The ignition relay looks ok. Could it be that there was a bad contact here somewhere?

A note on the history: I have noticed that the main starter cable on the +50 grid looks melted and charred, although there is no apparent problem during the failed starts - the starter turns fine, no excessive heating of the cable, no voltage drop, no burnt smell. There has been, however, a burnt smell when accelerating or driving at high rpm's, making me suspect a defect voltage regulator on the alternator. But can the alternator really generate enough current to melt that cable?
