My Aero poor starting/running story continues....
In a previous post I asked about my problem with the
car taking far too long cranking before actually
starting, and having a puff of gassy 'smoke' when it
did eventually start.
I called my local parts place, and they had the coolant
temp sensor right on the shelf - I even had the guy
double check to make sure it was for my specific car,
and he replied that his listing showed ALL 2.3L 9K's
with this exact sensor.
I bought it, installed it easily enough, and the car
would then not start AT ALL !!
It had a strong odor of gas, however, and I could hear
the fuel pump, so I pulled fuse #14, cranked again,
and it started and stalled.
After playing funny games with fuse #14 and cranking
I found that it will run as long as I crank it with
fuse #14 out, and when it 'catches', shove the fuse
in quickly - it then idles at around 15-1700 RPM, and
hunts madly, and sometimes stalls - which then began
the whole fuse out/crank/fuse in thing again.
I then decided that because I am not of the octopus
species, and do need my car to run, that I would rig
a 'test' arrangement of a switch and fuseholder to
allow starting/running of the car without contortions
on my part, and it has worked so far.
The car has been decent enough to take me around town,
but I am not comfortable enough to trust it for any
longer trips - it runs rough, comes off idle roughly,
hunts continuously in the low RPMs and is not anywhere
near as smooth running as it has always been.
My mechanic told me to clear the 'check engine' light
which appeared after this adventure began and just
drive it around for a while and watch it closely.
I am hoping that someone here has had the same, or
similar experience with this starting/rough running
and possibly also with the coolant temp sensor.
Straight out questions:
1 - Does anyone know if it is true that all 2.3L 9K's
use this same sensor ?
2 - Is there a cheap way to get the diagnostic codes
read to isolate the problem(s) easily without a
visit to the local untrustworthy parts changer
called a 'dealer' ?
Thanks for reading this long thing !
