...and I am an advocate of rebuilding, even though replacement would theoretically be cheaper. I say theoretically because to be sure your replacement engine won't kill itself sooner than you'd like, you'd want to address the chains in that engine too, which would add to the expense of the repair. Rebuilding what you've got means you can go through the entire engine, addressing all seals etc.
Regarding the head, don't be surprised if at least half your valves are gone, and also guides. Look for pieces of valve guide embedded in the pistons, and be sure no scoring occurred in the cylinder walls (if so, a replacement engine is now called for).
Don't fear if your head is toast, even though 2.3 heads are pricey. You can use the 2.0 head. I did this a year ago and can't say I notice any performance difference. Perhaps a bit slower to accelerate at highway speeds? Just be aware that you should use the cams and gears for the 2.3 head!
Good luck whichever option you choose, and keep us posted. Definitely worth the trouble if your car's in new condition.
