Just got my first 9000 in September after many years in a C900. I found Quasi's site invaluable (http://www.quasimotors.com).
Things to look for:
DI cassette
motor mounts (all 3)
serp belt and pulleys (3 pulleys plus tensioner)
heater blower and heater core
make sure all electronics are working correctly
there's lots more, like the debate over whether the manual or automatic are most reliable. Go with what you prefer, but be forewarned that each have thier issues.
In general, the later models (most say '95 or later) seem best, but in New Hampshire where I live there are lots of older ones with tons of miles that just keep on going.
These are fine cars but need some aggressive maintenance. But they are strong, reliable and very durable--but you do have to keep after them a bit. Having a good tech handy is important, and doing some of your own work makes it a bit easier.
Have your friend look at a bunch of cars. I found a huge difference between average ones bad ones and good ones. The 96 CSET I bought is a 9, needing only a few minor things. But it took a while to find. Check the TSN classifieds and dealers who are sponsors. I got mine at Swedish Connection in NJ. Very good experience.
Good luck.
Noel
