Reusing head bolts Posted by Bryan [Email] (#542) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bryan) on Sat, 29 Nov 2003 14:03:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I put a head gasket on my '94 9000 turbo, screwed up the valve timing, and have to pull it apart again. I used new head bolts when I put it together because I was told they are 'torque to yeild' (one time use) bolts. I had a Volvo with TTY bolts and the dealer told me they can actually be used a couple times. It all depends on the actual length of the bolt, since they stretch very slightly when torque is applied but don't necessarily become unusable.
I'm wondering if this is the case with the Saab bolts? I've seen some torque spec directions that included loosening all the bolts and retorquing them. Seems to me you couldn't't do that if they were a true one time use bolt.
What's the real scoop? Can I reuse these bolts? They've been on the car for a week, and not run (therefore, not heated up). If I really gotta use new ones, I'll do it, but these little things ain't cheap.
Thanks everybody.
