Since I intend sometimes in the not too far future to acquire a post '94
9k Saab I read up on the gearshift adjustment. On top of the gearbox casing, adjacent to the part number plate is the alignment hole, possibly with a rubber plug which has to be pried out. Select 4th gear and insert a
screwdriver (4mm shaft diameter) in hole. The hanle of the screwdriver is to prevent the shaft from falling into the casing-according to Haaynes.
Inside the car remove the gear lever gaiter and mounting frame. There is a alignment hole in the side of the lever housing of about 4mm dia. If a drill or scredriver can de inserted into this and the hole underneath then the adjustment is correct. Otherwise you have to loosen the pinchbolt at the selector rod adjacent to the coupler and move it untill the alignment is correct. In my case where i had the same symptoms I just put the transmission into 5th gear, loosened the pinchbolt, moved the lever a little bit to the left, tightened the pinchbolt, checked if I could engage all gears, and repeated the procedure untill it shifted properly. If you have no success you should check if your linkage is sloppy due to worn out plastic bushings at the gear lever to selector connection.
