I did this on my '86 not too long back. From memory...
1. Remove top covers to the 'aquarium', the area behind the false firewall. This will reveal (from passenger side to driver's side - U.S.) cruise control pump, evaporator housing, blower motor housing (center), wiper motor, wiper transmission, and fuel injection computer.
2. There will be a number of bolts holding the false firewall in place (4, I believe). One each on top of the strut mounting tower, and the other two down low, nearer the middle of the engine compartment.
3. Once those 4 bolts are out, you should be able to pull the false firewall up and out.
4. You'll have to loosen the A/C lines (remove the bolt and clamp on the strut tower that holds the lines in place, as well as the steering fluid resivoir), and pull the evaporator housing towards the passenger side to separate it from the blower motor casing. Do your best to move this up and out of the way. My car's A/C was shot at the time, so I went ahead and completely disconnected the evaporator and removed it.
5. You will then have to seek out and pry off the two big plastic flaps that clip the blower casing to the real (metal) firewall. Rotate and pull forward slightly on the blower housing to remove the housing from it's mount. You'll also want to take care and disconnect the control rods on the passenger side of the blower casing.
6. Now comes the tricky part, getting that thing out... This is more an art of contortion than a science. You may want to remove the bracket that holds the oil filler tube so that you can push it out of the way slightly. I've also heard others say that removing the intake manifold makes getting the blower out way easier. My '86 didn't have the hose-clamp style connection between the head and the intake, so I left mine on.
7. Once you get it out, crack the housing open, push the 'squirrel cage' off of the old motor's output shaft, drop it on the new one, and begin reassembly....
