I _believe_ (not sure) the CD model has the higher (older) front desing with taller headlights and bigger grille. CDE has the lower front lights and grille. Here in Fin we actually make difference in spoken language with new and old models of 9k and OG900 by "Stand Front" and "Bevelled Front"...
As a matter of fact the front design is different - compare for example the heater core / blower motor replacement that is supposed to be much easier in the newer models than with original front design.
I think in CDE Saab introduced first time the better standard accessories on the 9k i.e. power windows/mirrors & AC were standard accessory in the Car (at least on some markets). In CD those were optional. (Have you ever seen a 9k with manual windows?,,, the design is next to absolutely horrible looking)
The 91 CDE could be the model year 92 that has been delivered on 91 (i.e. early production models).
I hope someone can correct if I'm wrong... I haven't really followed-up the model years.
