A vague explanation of my experience

I've experienced the difference, so I feel I can answer your question.
I drove an 89 900S for 3 years, and just moved to a 93 9000CSE partially for the 4door/hatch, even in a car that looks like a normal 4dr sedan. I don't know the numbers, but the n/a 9000 2.3ltr seems to have a lot more torque than the 900 2.0ltr did. The only way I can seem to explain it is that the 9000 feels like it "means it." Like with the 900 you could get some quick starts, but the 9000 feels like you're really moving.
I think the difference is more the torque range. My 9000 seems to go fine as low as 1000rpm, and keep the push up to redline, whereas the 900 would be kinda weak to 3000, kick it, then seem to taper off. I redline my 9000 all the time, and it's nice and quiet, not that really loud "howl" that seemed to accompany high rpms in the 900.
The driving is definitely different. I like the 9000 a lot more in the snow.
I'm happy with the switch, if that helps any. But it's only been a week.
