Over the past 25 years, I've changed probably hundreds of cars to AMSOIL synthetic when they had 100,000 or more miles on them. 2 or 3 had leakage problems, that I know of, and those either had problems before or had been badly maintained. Never had any problems with my (or family)personal cars.
I recommend using a good engine flush first--best I know of are made by AMSOIL and BG (Auto Rx also gets good marks, but takes longer). If you don't, or won't, flush, go ahead and put in the synthetic. Watch for any sign of sudden increase in oil consumption. If you see this after a couple thousand miles, change the oil filter and top off. If the first batch of synthetic gets nasty looking, you might want to drop it after 4-5,000 miles.
