how tightly does your hatch seal? If it is somehow misaligned or not sealing tightly enough, perhaps motion on bumpy roads or windy conditions while parked cause it to shift. When does it go off while parked? Any time, or on windy days, when big trucks drive by, etc?
I know this sounds weird, but I've noticed with my hatch ('96 CSE) that when I use the door switch to release it, then close the driver's door, the air pressure in the car when the door closes is sufficient to lift the hatch a little, then the weight of the hatch closes it. So it is a very tight fit. This does not happen with the roof vented or a window down--it is very definitely an air pressure thing.
But I can envision the opposite happening, where the hatch doesn't close quite enough which might result in the problem you are having. I haven't looked at mine to see, but is there a way to adjust the positioning of the latch?
I had a VW GTI with a loose and rattling hatch that I traced to hardened up rubber stops and a misadjusted latch. The 9K is different, but may be worth a look.
Good luck!
Noel
