Auto trans loves reverse, hates forward...

I just limped a 93 CSE turbo automatic home from just down the street. It has a bad automatic, which acts up by not moving very well in forward speeds. Reverse works very well -- thinking of mounting headlights on the rear bumper... At any rate, the car seemed to pick up speed a bit as I drove it a little further.
Anyway, though this is a parts car, I'm always up for a crazy project. May I presume that good solid reverse drive suggests the torque converter is okay? If so, would new clutches be within reach of an upper-intermediate Saab DIY veteran such as myself? Kinda itchy to give it a try, if anyone's got any tips or suggestions.
I hear rumors of special tools, expensive parts, etc. What say we make this a class project for us Saab owners? Stay tuned people, as I attempt to repair a faulty accelerator potentiometer; debug an SRS fault; eliminate the cause of a spectacularly blowing fuse 17 (10 ACC/EDU fuse); and a host of other gremlins!
...and then sell the car part by part...
