You mentioned going "underneath" the car- I assume you mean to remove the fender liner for access. The 36mm pinion gear bolt needs to have the 4 indents or stakes hammered back using a suitable chisel about 1/4" wide and shaped to the perfect angle. A bench grinder would be handy here unless you have just the right chisel in stock.On my transmission the bolt had been under-torqued and on reassembly I chose to reuse it because virgin metal ended up over the stake indents at 110 ft.lbs. In working to remove this bolt it became clear how effective even the slightest metal spur was in resisting loosening torque. (Saab recommends a new bolt but I hear they're expensive.)
