How much is "a bit" of sputtery idle? White smoke in the cold weather is normal and to be expected. Often these engines have a little attitude in terms of idle smoothness in the cold as well.

As to your oil leak, I usually like to take the car to the local carwash and give the motor a good pressure wash (turn the engine off during the process), so that I can start with a clean engine and gauge how quickly/how much oil is leaking. Again, these heads do have seepage tendencies and I am against disturbing them unless the leak is prodigious or there is some other issue.

Valve cover gaskets are notorious seepers as well and can often fool the uninitiated into thinking it's the head gasket when it's not.

If your bottle test turns up nothing and you're still concerned that the idle is too rough, check that your plugs are correctly gapped and/or not appreciably worn. They should be gapped to .9mm, and if you need to replace them, make sure to get the proper NGK resistor plugs (not expensive, by the way).

From a second look at your symptoms, I wouldn't be at all surprised if your car is fine.
