Ive actually tried both (new NGK plugs and throttle body cleaning). In addition to the throttle body cleaning I used the 3 part BG product cleaning system that is supposed to de-carbonize the the intake valves etc but it did not make much of a difference. This engine was silky smooth (like a straight 6 and quite unlike my 2.0 litre classic 900 engine) when it was new.
One other thing that I have noticed is that the engine pings if 87 octane fuel is used wheras when it was new 87 just meant less boost. Which make me wonder if carbon deposits could be the real culprit (ie the deposts are too heavy for the BG stuff to clean)
