This sounds like it might be the lower rear control arm (wishbone) bushing. My car is a standard trans and as soon as I would throw in the clutch and coast the noise would begin. If I accelerated it would disappear. If I put the brakes on it would come back. Try having someone stand outside the car to observe the front wheel action. While rolling along at a slow speed stab the brake pedal. If the wheel makes a clunk and jumps back in the wheel opening by a couple of inches or more then this could very likely be the problem.
