why not just dump it and get something else?
There are lots of cars to choose from. Go buy something like a Camry, an Accord or even a Taurus. You can buy 6 year-old ones all day long for $4-5K or less. As you note, no car is perfect. But all require replacement of parts as they age. They are machines. Stuff wears out, well-engineered or not. And your 9K is 12 years old. But as anyone on this board will say, regular and preventive maintenance is crucial on Saabs (and most European cars, really)

But you have a Saab and a BMW. Both are high-end European cars, with repair costs to match, partly due to low production runs so parts aren't as plentiful or cheap as for higher volume cars. And as with any higher end car, because the dealer and manufacturer see you coming and figure you have deep pockets. Which is why so many of us on this board DIY a lot.

American cars can take a lot of abuse and have an incredible indifference to lack of maintenance. But many are not very well made, are not all that much fun to drive, and have their own set of bean-counter influenced engineering issues.
Japanese cars are incredibly reliable, but have IMHO horrible seats, generally numb steering, and are mostly boring transportation appliances. And there are horror stories with all of them, too, just not as many.

Good luck with your heater core.
I do wonder when mine will come due!

Noel
