I've read what has been posted and thought I might add just a little more.
I've done a little racing and auto crossing in addition to changing a lot of motorcycle tires. I'm sure I'll repeat some of what has already been said but...
The info in the manual and on the door jam is a good place to start but keep in mind it only pertians to the stock tires. Tire specs can change even if they are the same type that were originally stock. If you have changed the tires you should start with what is recommended on the tire. As mentioned before tire pressure should be checked often and changed according to weather conditions, load, and driving style. Tread wear will give you an idea if you are running to little pressure (wear at the edges) or to much (wear in the center) but unfortunately, it doesn't become visible for many miles.
Motorcycle tires are only good for about 25% of the mileage of the average car tire and they are somewhat more expensive. For this reason most experienced riders check their pressures often. When I was doing a lot of work on bikes we used to give riders a general pressure rule that I was told works for auto tires as well. So if you don't mind checking pressures frequently...
Start with the mid-range (cold tires) recommended. After running the tires up to temp, about 10-15 miles should be enough, check them again. A properly inflated tire will increase about 10% in pressure ie: 32psi cold will go to about 35psi hot. If the pressure increase is less than 10% they are not warming up enough which indicates to much initial cold pressure. Conversly, if the increase is greater than 10% the tires are getting to warm indicating the initial cold pressure was to low.
I've tried this while crewing on my friend's pro-rally team and it seems to work.
