You may have grabbed something else. I remember someone saying there is another sw up high on the pedal arm. My book shows just one sw used to do the brake lights and (stuff like CC senses when the lamps go hot) general pictorial that the sw is there somewhere. But I do have good schematics.
Any brake circuit is the same. Has to be just a simple fused sourced to the switch then to the back lamps.
In this case where there are other things sensing brake activity like cruise control and a few other safety things they could source voltage back onto the the brake circuit and backfeed the lamps on.
Test measure (meter or test lamp) either side of switch before and after fuse inplace/out of place. This is just to make sure you are looking at THE brakeswitch. The brake switch should have power on one side w/brakes off; power both sides when brakes applied. Brake switches have a failure rate (everything does) as it is a busy little critter in it's lifetime. I am still leaning to it and maybe your distracted by another sw. OR some other source is backfeeding juice to the lamp circuit.
Gotta bail for now Getting up at 0300 hrs to drive North of Chicago to see my oldest son grad from Navy Recruit Training. I did the same 25 yrs ago. Now I pass the torch. 'cept he will be a SeaBee and I rode destroyers.
