HELP needed! Think AC compressor/clutch failed ...

Heard this funny yowl tonite, which went away immediately, but was followed by a burning smell. Was going about 35 to 40, 2-lane with no safe place to pull over for about 5 miles.
When I did there was smoke from RF corner. Popped hood. Serp belt and all are turning fine (belt and pulleys have about 12K on them.)
The AC compressor has some sticky black-brown stuff coming out of it and a bit of it is sort of sprayed on a couple of hoses and stuff.
Engine is running fine. There is a rattly noise that sounds like it is coming from the compressor.I don't know what it's supposed to look like when it is normal, so I'm not sure what to look for. When I cycle the AC on and off from the ACC controls the inner section of the hub on the AC compressor does not turn like I think it probably should.
I think this is covered under the warranty I got with the car, but if not, what am I likely looking at for $$?
Why does this kind of thing always happen at Xmas??
Thanks in advance, and happy holidays!
Noel
