I posted an earlier version of this note a few days ago at the end of a thread that has become inacative; I think that he lesson learned is worth repeating.
I used CRC anti-squeak paste (red) on the backs of the new metal master pads I installed in our 93 about a year or two ago. Just a few days ago, I had to replace the dust cover boot on one front caliper because of the following chain of events:
* The CRC had bonded to the dust cover, effectively glueing it to the back of the inner pad.
* As the pad wore and the piston extended further out, it pulled the dust cover out of the grove inside the bore of the caliper.
* That allowed water to get in, causing rust of the caliper ridge and binding of the piston.
* That resulted in a dragging brake.
* That caused squeaking (in spite of the CRC which had become char-broiled).
* That brought on spousal complaints and she got to drive the Aero, which we usually spare from winter driving, for a few days until I could fix it.
I recommend coating the outside of the dust cover boot with brake grease (e.g. SylGlide) before applying CRC or similar anti-squeak stuff to the back of the pads. SylGlide itself is deisgned to stop squeaking and may be all that's needed to coat the back of the pad. When I re-assembled the brake after wire-wheeling off the burnt CRC, that's all I used and we haven't heard a squeak out of it yet.
Other points relevant to thread "Brake pad replacement on 1995 9000 - need details":
* The metal master pads do require a little warm up, but even my wife adapted to it.
* It is possible to replace the pads without undoing the guide pins that need a 7 mm Allen. You just remove the two 19 mm-head bolts that mount the whole assembly to the hub carrier, then slide out the part into which the guide pins are screwed.
* While you can get by without a 7mm allen bit, you will need a 9mm wrench for the bleed screw; this is the only use I have ever made of this wrench, which is omitted from most sets.
