Low pitched grinding noise from front wheel

Hi everyone. I've had a low pitched grinding noise coming from one of my wheels for some time now. I believe it's the left/driver side since when I make a left turn, putting the weight of the car on the passenger front wheel, it goes away.
I had a non-SAAB indy mechanic scope it out quickly while I was having something else done and he said it was 'probably' the wheel bearings. I asked if they could be repacked but he said that my car - 92 9000S 2.3 n/a 5spd - isn't built that way; that I would have to replace the 'whole' peice since they are sealed and a 'one peice'.
Now, I could be mistaken about what he said it was, but I think it was the bearings. Could it perhaps be something else, i.e. rotors? ?? The mechanic also mentioned to me that he had an older Mazda that made the same noise a while back and he thought it wouldn't be a serious problem for a long while as he drove his for a couple of years that way before deciding to repair it.
In any case, does anyone have any insights or similar experience with this and if so, how much should I be prepared to spend to have it fixed? And please, while I appreciate your advice on pulling out a beer and the tools and fix it myself to save money, I don't have the ability to do that for numerous reasons... Any advice or even mechanic referrals are appreciated! I live in San Francisco. Thanks for reading my long message!
