Heater fan quit. Basic advice, anyone?

We're having a 35-degree heat wave in PA, but tomorrow the deep freeze returns. My '91 9KT heater fan started running at various erratic speeds about last Thursday. Yestiddy it died on my wife. Still dead today.
I need basic diagnosis advice. It does not appear to be showing any fault codes when I first switch on the key. I did reset the HVAC ECU according to owners manual instructions.
I assume I'm in for a controller, or a fan, or both. Where's the controller? And do you reach the fan under the dash or from the engine side of the firewall?
Thanks guys.
