upon pre inspection (before I take everything off in the coming days/weeks)...I noticed the timing chain rattle I hear is from the tensioner side, mid way down (slightly below the head). I used a stethescope and checked all areas, locating hte rattle to that specific point. It is more pronounced as I rev the engine.

I know this is more curiosity than anything else, but is it possible that the spring in hte (later) style tensioner weakens over time? I get a some slack between cam sprockets when turning the engine forward.

Well after 300K km, and after writing out quite a large order of parts, I found tensioner extended only 7mm, hardly any wear on the upper sprockets (burring can JUSt be felt), cam and cam sprockets line up to their appropriate indicators nearly perfect.
Needless to say I am going to do the complete job as there is not point in going back twice, plus I want the enjoyment of banging my head on the fender and raking my knuckels;-)

What else is one to do on a cold winter's eve?
