I've had three 9000s but a friend gave me an 86 Volvo, of which I have a strange alternator-related question that I know the savvy people on this board can help me with.

The original alternator seized up (at 185k), so I ran over to the nearest DIY store and bought a new one. I installed it but here is the rub: the D+ wire (which the last owner had already re-wired) no longer seems to provide enough oomph to energize the alternator - when connected to the alt it reads about 1.2 Volts.

Should I attempt to trace back the rewiring? I would much rather fashion some sort of alternative D+ wire, since that would be far easier - these Volvos seems much harder to service than a 9k. If I were to make an alternative, what would that look like? I know that if I just hook the D+ up to a switched source, it would just hot-wire the ON circut so I could never stop the engine. Could I just hook it up through a light-bulb to the swtiched power, which seems to be exactly what the factory did?
