Exhaust why is 93 different?

I am in need of replacing various pieces of exhaust on my '93 9000 CS non-turbo. I looked at some sponsor sites and noticed the '93 exhaust has the CAT converter fixed to the head pipe and the flex (which mine is leaking) is a seperate item whereas the other years, the flex is built into the head pipe and the CAT converter is the intermediate pipe. This sure seems strange to make a change for ONE YEAR! Is this when GM came into play??
QUESTIONS:
1) Are the rear muffler and connection pipe the same for all the non turbo 2.3's?
2) Can I swap the head pipe for a non CAT one, say a '92 or '94?
3) In doing item (2) above, can I add a CAT converter for a later model?
4) Or performing (2) above - not put a CAT back on as a "TEST" as this car is SLOW to accelerate and is only getting 25 mpg on the high way running an averave of 70 - 75 during my 230 mile commute (round trip). It should (IMO) be getting close to 30 mpg.
5) Is there a rear muffler by-pass pipe, ergo no muffler.
6) Can the trubo exhaust be installed on a non turbo car to give it more power (granted it will be limited but evey little bit helps..)
It is the original CAT (I have most of the service records) w/ 175K on it (5 speed).
Also, the PO installed 5 clutch Master Cylinders - is there any warning before it craps out and the pedar gets stuck to the floor?
Many thanks!!
Erik
