Cooling Fan Resistor

I have a 91 9kt with a fan resistor problem. Actually it does'nt work. My mechanic advised me to put a wire into the fan switch power line to keep the fan running. This works to keep the engine overheating, BUT I'm drinking fuel like crazy. Thermo dynamics at play. I don't want to buy a new resistor but I saw a posting using radio shack resistors to get the job done and they seemed succesful. How would I go about doing this. I can spend the new resitor money on another part of my car. Open to all suggestions.Thanx ahead of time.
