It sounds like you're not getting full performance now, so hold off on those performance mods.
Half-yellow is the classic sign of Base Boost. Full boost is the end-of-yellow / beginning of red. If the EDU detects knock, it reduces the boost to protect the engine from damage. Now, a lot of things can knock you down to base boost, as TKC says.
Of course, make sure you have the EXACT NGK spark plugs as specified in the manual. NO SUBSTITUTIONS. The DI (Direct Ignition) system was designed to work with a specific set of NGKs. Some folks have had good luck with other plugs; most folks haven't. But the time to experiment is when everything is working right.
Next, make sure the gap is correct. Don't assume it comes out of the box right.
The biggest contributor to knock is gasoline grade - octane. If you aren't running premium (at least 91 octane in the US), get a full tank of it. Two gallons of 91 in a 16 gallon tank of 87 doesn't count. Some engines can run on regular and still get full boost. I don't think many Aero's can.
If you've got good plugs, good gas, had the fuel and air filters replaced recently - basically, tuned the car up - and you're still getting base boost, then there are plenty of other places to look. Check the archives. It could be a vacuum leak, sticky BPC or wastegate actuator, or even a sticky cruise control switch (base boost only with CC engaged). Check the archives for Base Boost.
DO NOT adjust the wastegate actuator unless you absolutely know it has been changed. Yes, you can get full boost (and more), but find out why the car isn't working normally before you fool with it.
Once you get full boost, then decide if you want to get even more power. The engine can do it - in later years, the Aero had more power in the 5-speed models than the automatics. Of course, that should tell you something. The automatic tranny is a weak spot in the 9K, and putting more power through it isn't going to make it last longer. So unless your mom wants to shell out $3K for a new tranny, leave the boost per spec.
