df - Not sure what you are saying. Did you remove both the amp under the seat and the original head unit ? I am no expert on this but will only offer what I did coiencidentally in my 95 9000cs : I removed both my old head unit and the amp below the drivers side seat. When removing the amp, I reconnected the appropriate speaker wire, essentially bypassing what was the old amp. In that case, you should have no problem with running a new head unit (your 40 watt unit) If you did not remove the amp under the seat, that could be your problem. My amp did not accept 'low level input' from the head unit, (if I have the term correct). Therefore, without removeing the amp you would be feeding an ampified signal into the amp and amplifying it again. (distortion ?)
If anyone can articulate this better, please jump in.
