Hi John,
Had exactly the same problem on my 9K CSE FPT. Emailed Abbott racing in UK for rebuild cost, here is part of their response:
"We know all about that, that is your 3rd and 4th gear synchro hub broken away from the circlip. We normally charge £600.00 for a gearbox rebuild including synchros and bearings also includes removal and refitting (please note this will be plus VAT), but unfortunately I am unable to tell you how much damage the gearbox has suffered and how long the car has been having 3rd and 4th gear problems. You may have got away with it, or you may have damaged 3rd and 4th gear synchro hub £75.00, 4th gear £295.00, and possible shaft damage £270.00+ . What happens is when the circlip breaks all the torque is forced onto 4th gear and the bearing and the gear then buries itself into the top leyshaft bearing. This then breaks and breaks that circlip and the damage goes on, however, if you catch it in time you can normally put everything back together again with the correct preload and all will be okay."
Sorry but looks like a rebuild is needed. Good Luck
Tony
